Hi kids!

We’ve got a new contest for you: talking about how chemistry is important to everyday life and a sustainable future!

Key points for this video contest:

- get your facts straight. These guys know their science, so don’t make it up!
- 1-4 minutes long.
- narrative style (“Jimmy’s new windows saved his family money from their electrical bill every month, so they went out for lots of picnics”)

Happy filming!

Hey all,

Here’s some clarification some of what ACC is looking for in terms of tone of the piece: Serious but upbeat, urgent but optimistic, forward-looking, addressing a serious issue but certainly not preachy.

A couple videos that exemplify what they’re looking for include the below. One of which is from our very own grand prize winner of the Siemens contest!

We Can Do Better
Chemistry and the Low-Carbon Economy

Now I’m not saying they want these exact videos, but hopefully it’ll give you some idea of what their looking for in terms of tone.

Be sure to include all three of the elements they list in the brief!

1: Energy Production: Shale Gas
2: Using Energy: Energy Efficiency
3: Reusing Energy: Energy Recovery

Happy filming! Opening the floor to all questions and discussion!

So need clarification please, they want the first item to be using only shale natural gas? I was reading this as an example of what we might use, or in combination of mentioning it and others.

If you want to mention shale gas in combination with some other types of energy production helped by chemistry, that’s okay, but I would put some emphasis on shale gas in your Energy Production portions of the piece.

Hey Zooppa folks! In case you want to see me be a video scientist, check out the new video brief on the American Chemistry Council contest page! Feel free to mock my Luke Skywalker haircut.

Also, FYI, music used is from Kevin MacLeod’s Incompetech site. A great place for music if you’re not a composer and can’t afford a commercial license for pro music. Warning: Once you listen to a bunch of music from his site, you’ll always notice it as you browse around online.

Ian, that video is fantastic!

Thanks, I think that makes it crystal clear now!

I’m glad it helps!

I have no real influence over who wins and who doesn’t, though, so flattery will get you nowhere! ;)

Exciting new music opportunity for you folk when it comes to music. Zooppa is partnering with Friendly Music to offer some tracks with commercial rights for only $1.99. We’re starting with a selection on the From Chemistry to Energy contest page. Check it out! All the instructions you need are right there.

You don’t have to use these songs, but we wanted to make them available to you, and maybe help give your piece that extra something that you might not have had the resources for before.

As this is a new feature, any and all feedback is encouraged! Sound off here on the boards.

Is this process of Gas extraction also known as “fracking”? Or is this something different?

thanks

Hi Schleppfilms - Yes, Hydraulic Fracturing (“Fracking”) is a process by which shale gas can be extracted.

There’s a lot of information on both Shale Gas and Fracking here:

http://www.americanchemistry.com/Policy/Energy/Shale-Gas

Of course, there’s a lot of information in other sources as well.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the answer. Yes, the film Gas Land provided me with a lot of information on the process as well.

Needless to say, I will not be participating in this contest, cause then I would be part of the problem.
Which can be summed up as a release of hazardous chemicals into our environment and water supply.

If I win a place, when will I be able to receive and use the prize?
And, this video contest is everything we just learned in my science class! I am so excited!
One more question- Is there an age limit on this video contest?

You have to be 14 or older to enter, and prizes take generally 60-90 days to process, though we’re taking steps to make that turnaround faster.

Can’t wait to see your submission!

This contests confuses me, what is the agenda? “to educate a broad audience on how chemistry is the affordable future of energy?” Really? Seems too general for this kind of headache inducing material. What’s it selling Pro-fracking publicity? Trying to encourage high school students in a chemistry degree?? Information would help determine what type of angle to take. Thanks!

We don’t provide any videomaking software, but there are some resources on our website that you can check out.

Hi mightymattp,

They do want you to talk about shale gas, and you can encourage an environmentally responsible way to go about doing that. They want videos that show how chemistry can aid in meeting our energy needs, helping with both economy and environmental issues along the way.

Unfortunately it’s an emerging and controversial topic that I know nothing about. I would think interviewing experts in the field would be best way to understand this challenging subject. But I get the feeling the sponsor is asking for someone to simplify the subject with clean and smart motion graphics (in lieu of a documentary). It might be fun to do with sponsorship money but too much homework for spec work for me, especially with my track record on this site.

Hi David,

I should be getting it this week, Friday at the latest. Thanks all for patiently waiting. It should be pretty easy to attach to the end of whatever you’ve created.

Hi there, my queries are

1. Do you accept entries from India. Or this contest is open only for Americans.
2. Is it okay if I make a movie totally based on the information that is provided in ACC website related to all 3 topics, E - Production, E-Efficency, and E-Recovery?

1: Sure, entries from India are accepted. The more the merrier!
2: Also, sure! I imagine their facts are as factual as anybody else’s facts! It’s all about how you bring those facts to life in your video. Looking forward to your submission!
