Raise Awareness for Health With Your Film Talents

Hey Zooppsters,

We’re proud to have such a creative group on our site. And socially active too-every time there’s a contest for sustainability, or advocacy, you guys really pull out your best work. You wow us every time. <3

That’s why we wanted to give a tip o’ the hat to a current contest. These guys, partnering with several government organizations, are raising awareness about high blood pressure (hypertension) and the health risks it brings. They’re looking for awesome short videos showing how easy and simple lifestyle habits can reduce risk, and mediate symptoms. This is not a Zooppa contest. We just think it’s cool.

Beat Down Blood Pressure Video Contest

  • Videos should be 2 minutes or less
  • Show people using health tech, or maintaining a healthy lifestyle
  • $5,500 in prizes, including $500 Popular Choice Award

Check out the details at bloodpressure.challenge.gov. And good luck!

The Zooppa Time Machine…

It was (roughly) around one year ago today that Zooppa teamed up with GoDaddy for a campaign that featured over 45 submissions. Okay…okay…so maybe we don’t quite have to step into the Delorean to check out all the sweet videos from the campaign last April. However, we did get to check in with lshertzer to give us a little insight on his winning submission and a his other videos over the past year. Check it out:

Mind giving us a little info on your creative background and Ribbit Multimedia Inc.?

Ribbit Multimedia is a website design and marketing company I started in 2003 who’s clients have included Regency Centers, Blackbeard’s Rum Company, Gaylord Texan, Travelocity, and now GoDaddy.com (with some thanks to Zooppa).

We started with the GoDaddy commercial contest just for fun, but actually ending up winning a couple contest last year from Zooppa and a few other commercial contests.

Of the 4 you sent for GoDaddy, which one did you feel strongest about prior to entering? Did you think that Superpowers had the best chance at placing?

It was the first time we try making commercials, so we didn’t think we had a chance at all. Buy, yes, the Superpowers one we liked the best. I think our friends got a kick out of that one the most.

Since then you’ve also submitted to the Pillsbury, Pepto-Bismol, and more recently the Jones Soda WhoopAss Campaigns. Your Whoopass - Karate Style video even took third place. Can you explain to us your creative evolution through the past year and how it affected your Jones Soda Video?

I think the biggest thing we have learned is that sound effects are funny! When you add them in the right spot, they can make the video.

What lies on the creative horizon for lshertzer?

We would like to get more into commercials, we just need to step up the quality of the video/lighting which should come with time. It’s a learning process but a fun one.

And, of course, more videos for Zooppa.

Awesome. Thanks!

“Instagram for Video” app Viddy: A Solution to on-the-go Film Production?

On April 11th, Viddy Inc. introduced their streamlined movie studio app that taps the creative potential of those always on the go. Viddy gives smartphone users the capability to capture video on their mobile phone, apply music and hip filters, and upload it on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The company has also released its own social network to patrons looking for an efficient way to host videos.

Of course, anything video catches our attention here at Zooppa and, from that, it has left us pondering the potential of the app for the Zooppa Community. If you are tired of hearing about video apps out there, wait just one second…

Viddy claims that their app design is easier to work with than iMovie IOS. That’s quite a statement to make against an app that currently dominates the iPhone video editing market. Still not interested? Only two weeks into its launch, Viddy has already consumed an impressive 150,000 downloads from the Apple App Store.

So, at this point do I have you somewhat interested on how to get in the action? Well, for those of you who have an iPhone, you are in luck! Viddy is available for FREE in the app store. To those holding your precious Android in your hand while reading this post, you’ll have to find your patience as Viddy, Inc. has announced that it plans on expanding to Android and other mobile phone platforms “in the near future”. And for those already diggin’ Viddy – they have also hinted that premium production packs are just around the corner.

We’d like to get the opinions of our Zooppa Community that have given it a whirl - just a way to throw quick vids to friends or is it really a solution to on-the-go film production?

Stay-at-Home Dad Wins on Zooppa

This week, we’re highlighting Zooppa Member Justin Adkinson (game7) who has so far cashed in on our Silk Campaign and our Ultimate Software Campaign. We had the opportunity to talk to him a little about the evolution of his film-making and the breakdown of his submissions.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I am a stay at home dad right now but have a passion for creating videos. I have been doing video work for a long time but after my daughter was born I found a new and fresh passion for it. So, after 2 years of making video of her I started Heavensent Films because she was the biggest miracle in my life. I think every new parent feels the same way after having a child but I wanted to create videos that she would love watching later in life instead of the “usual” family style films.

How did your film-making translate into Zooppa competitions?

I heard about Zooppa a few years ago through a family member who thought I could have a chance to win in a few contests. At that time I wasn’t anywhere near ready to compete in video or graphic design with the Zooppa community. My experiences from the last 2 years of filming my daughter, self taught video concepts, and adding motion to video in order to add cinematic movements was only recently added to my skill set. I am definitely still learning and pushing myself beyond my comfort zones.

In the past 2 months we witnessed your Silk video winning a cash prize and your Ultimate Software - video also placing to receive a cash prize. Mind telling us a little bit about those videos? How was the creative process was similar/different?

As for the recent Silk Campaign I decided to film my daughter (with assistance from my wife) making cookies. I called it “Silk & Cookies”. Because it was all shot live I had to think on my feet and get the angles I wanted fast or as they happened because there was no going back once a 2 year old says or does something. After editing the first video entry for this contest I found myself coming up with other ideas with all of the footage I had of her helping my wife make cookies. That’s how I came up with the title Silk is just plain FUN! which won 8th place. The only setup that I did was with my daughter’s dolls at her table and having silk & cookies on it to share. My daughter was so surprised and excited that I had to make sure to capture her reaction as it happened.

For the Ultimate Software contest I wanted to think “outside the box” so to speak and create something slightly abstract, but I still wanted to use something practical and within my expertise filming. I came up with filming her toy wood train set and named the video A Truly Unified System which in the end won 1st place. This really surprised me because I loved the other entries for this contest. I thought that the text animation on some of them was top notch and couldn’t be beat. I think it goes to show that we (the video creators) don’t know exactly what to expect when it comes down to the company picking their favorite piece of work. It also makes me want to think outside the box a lot more if possible when creating videos of any kind just to push myself.

As a follow up, can you talk about your Buick/NCAA submission and how the creative process had to change?

Now for the latest Buick/NCAA contest I was introduced through my brother in law a close friend of his who was the QB for the University of North Dakota. After contacting him about this contest he was more than happy to tell his story. To my surprise he had the most amazing story to tell. The difference with this contest was we were really limited on time and in order to tell a story like Kelby’s I had to cut so much out and still try to get the same impact across to the viewer. This was the most challenging and creative process I have ever gone through in order to tell a story. (Check out Kelby’s foundation Holiday Magic from Markus)

So, you have received $3,000 in prizes thus far. For a 2-month user submitting only 6 videos that is quite an accomplishment! Now that you have a few competitions under your belt, what key takeaways do you believe will benefit you in participating in your next Zooppa competition?

I have definitely felt that my skill set as a video producer/filmmaker has been noticed because of the money I have won so far. I am really appreciative to Zooppa for having these competitions where creative people in the community can push themselves to create something for companies they would otherwise never get a chance to. I think that having these few competitions under my belt have really helped me professionally to try new things. And after seeing the great competition from these contests it makes me want to continue crafting my filmmaking skills to become better at what I do. I am nowhere near done learning but in the Zooppa community I feel we all can learn from each other and give constructive criticism where needed to help better each contest entry.

Thanks Justin!

HollyShorts From Around the World

The act of collecting cinematic work from all over the globe is something Zooppa does every day. That’s why we like film fests like the HollyShorts International Short Film Festival held in my home town: Los Angeles.

What makes this festival really unique are the prizes. Last year they gave away $40,000 in post production package from some of the top companies in LA! This means that you can get a top company to do the editing for your next project. The Jury usually consists of Industry pros like Marc Fergus the writer of “Children of Men”. The week long fest takes place in August. Get your shorts in 30min or less by April 15th! The submission fee is a fairly small 45 bucks 40 bucks for students.

As always we here at Zooppa encourage you to enter as many original works to as many film fests as you can to gain maximum exposure. I don’t think I have to point out that Los Angeles is an awesome place to get noticed.

Take it easy,
Manny

Eat, Drink & Be Covered Winners Announced

The winners are in for the Pepto-Bismol competition! It was a really successful competition, and we all had a lot of fun with it! The tagline behind the campaign was “Eat, Drink & Be Covered”, and everyone took that and got really creative! The Pepto-Bismol Team said, “There was some tremendous work submitted for the Pepto-Bismol contest. After watching all of the videos (one of the more fun days we have had in a long time), there were a couple that really stood out.”

Drum roll please… and the winners are…

The 1st place Client Award went to Zoopppa user “reellance” with WOAH… These spots are very funny, clever and centered around a great concept! The series featured Game Day, Thanksgiving, New Years and Christmas spots highlighting moments during these events where you would say “woah”. At the end, the moment you realize you’ve eaten too much, you really say WOAH, and need Pepto. “This spot put everything together - great consumer insight, terrific production and great use of humor. The “woah” moments are something that everyone can relate to, which really opens people’s minds to the advertising”- The Pepto-Bismol Team

The 2nd place Client Award went to Zooppa member petemack. The campaign Pep Talk is very funny, and also a great concept. These spots feature great voice talent giving different people “Pep Talks” in the mirror, and telling them to get back out there! “Loved the idea behind this. It really made Pepto the hero and was executed in an entertaining and humorous manner that is consistent with the brand’s tone.”- The Pepto-Bismol Team

The 3rd place Client Award went to Zooppa member tshort. The campaign, “Don’t Worry, There’s Pepto Bismol!” brings a hilarious spin to the holidays. This campaign takes a normal holiday scene and ruins it, with a very simple and funny visual. This does a great job showing the benefit the product can bring to the holidays. “These spots brought to life a real consumer experience in an unexpected and entertaining manner. Even after watching them multiple times, it still makes me smile.”- The Pepto-Bismol Team

The 4th place Client Award: Zooppa member HoofSC “Any Season, Any Occasion” “Sometimes the best advertising is a simple idea that is done with brilliance – as is the case here. The production quality was outstanding and the humor at the end tied everything together.”- The Pepto-Bismol Team

The 5th place Client Award: Zooppa member CraigMCF “Pepto Puppets.” “This was a really fun spot. I was extremely impressed by the detail in the production. Very well done.” - The Pepto-Bismol Team

And finally the Zooppa Award! This was a tough one for us at Zooppa, because there were so many good entries. But the winner of the Zooppa award goes to Zooppa user Norman_Invasion, with Holidays…In Space. This campaign was a favorite with the Zooppa staff! It is a very “far out” idea, that really works. It uses a very serious voice talent that fits the campaign and the message perfectly. The writing is simple, funny, relate-able and gets the point across. It is a very solid campaign that could work for any holiday!

This was a really fun competition, that came out with great results! Thank you to everyone who participated, and we can’t wait to see what you guys bring to our future competitions! For a full list of all the winners and honorable mentions click here!

“Sometimes a great experience is worth a bit of stomach trouble, particularly when you have a witty friend like Pepto to pick you up.”
