Our manifesto

The future of creativity is female, so let’s start building it now.

Change starts small. It starts with each and every woman who has ever decided to stand up, to speak her truth, to defy expectations, and not to be afraid to ask for more. It is the sum of the millions of little actions by millions of incredible women, that when brought together, command the attention of the world.

Here at Zooppa, we are a community. There are twenty of us working between a co-working space in Manhattan and a repurposed historic farm estate in Venice (Italy) striving to support a community of talented and creative individuals located across the globe. Our community is composed of graphic designers, writers, photographers, filmmakers, and so many more who are the true power behind our company. We keep the day-to-day running so that they can thrive in whatever they do.

Let’s talk about our 60,000+ filmmakers, specifically the 30% of which that are women.

As an example, let’s talk about our 60,000+ filmmakers, specifically the 30% of which that are women. Far more than just a statistic, the women of Zooppa represent a higher average than the filmmaking industry at large (only 11% of all directors on the top 250 films of 2017 were women). Why? Because we are dedicated to providing a platform to support women who believe they can change the norm.

According to MTV, in 2015 almost 50% of the film and television programs at both USC and NYU - two of the best film schools in the United States - were women. And yet, only 18% of all the directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers on 2017’s top 250 films were women (a percentage that has remained almost constant since the the “Celluloid Ceiling” study began in 1998). This leads to the only natural question; where did all aspiring women filmmakers go?

This leads to the only natural question; where did all aspiring women filmmakers go?

You see, despite the progress women have been making, the statistics aren’t changing fast enough. Women in film shouldn’t have to compromise their passion because of the industry’s inability to promote equal pay or equal opportunity. At Zooppa, we provide our creatives with the opportunity to work on national campaigns, build their portfolio, gain experience, and put money in their pockets, regardless of gender. We promise today, and always, to actively invest in the future of our creatives.

Zooppa works really hard to get our creatives great jobs. We ask them what they like to work on, we ask the client what they want to create, and then we try and make the best matches. But we’re only one entity, and as hard as we may try, we’re not making enough of an impact. We still feel our female creatives aren’t getting enough representation. For every project we run, our female members are still only receiving 15% or less of the contracts. This statistic is especially confusing considering Harvard Business Review (and many other publications) found that women are the number one consumer group, making 85% of all product purchase decisions. If brands want the number one consumer group to buy their product, why aren’t they hiring women to produce the content to target their own market?

If brands want the number one consumer group to buy their product, why aren’t they hiring women to produce the content to target their own market?

This constant frustration we have with the bias against our female creatives is why we are reaching out to the world!

We want partners - like minded individuals, organizations, and companies that have the same goals as we do:

  • Get more jobs for female creatives
  • Produce creative content aimed at supporting women
  • Support other female-driven pursuits with their creative needs

The goal: support female-focused initiatives by engaging Zooppa’s community of creative women to produce relevant content that promotes their causes.

If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, as a woman, as a man, or as an ally who supports this initiative, please consider partnering with us. No group is too small, no mission is unimportant. We are all here to support one another.
