Workflow Question? Noise, Color, Stabilize

Hey guys. I have a simple question about workflow. My process for video usually involves a few steps each time…noise reduction, stabilization, and color correction & grading.

I use premiere CS5…neat video for noise, mercalli for stabilization…and a mixture of Looks & some other things for color.

My main question is…where do these 3 things fall into the workflow for most of you?

Noise
Stabilization
Color

The reason I ask, is that I shoot tons of events…weddings and such…sometimes ending up with 700-800 clips of video that need processed. By stabilizing first in the chain (within the sequence…not the full clip), and then doing noise and color…I save a lot of rendering time…sometimes I must do the last couple steps without even rendering…due to the size of the projects and the time that can feasibly put into them. When in a hurry…with a knowledge of noise & color…its no big deal to not preview them as I usually don’t run into problems…but stabilization requires a render and check always because it can be hit or miss sometimes. If I do stabilization LAST…the render time is crazy long as it will render the noise correction and color correction processes along with the stabilized video…that being said…i’ve been reading that many people stabilize FIRST…and many stabilize LAST. Just wondering if there is anything wrong with stabilizing BEFORE noise and color correction.

Oh…and dont say “shoot it still in the first place”…I am runnin and gunnin, and a lot of the shots just HAPPEN when I least expect them…so it is how it is. Thanks!

’Sup Chibi,

This is a very advanced question that may be beyond me. Just looking at it from my rendering experience, sometimes the best thing to do is just figure out what else you can do to fill up your time during the rendering.

This could be anything from designing what your packaging will look like, to making a sandwich.

Logically speaking, I think stabilizing should be first. Then rendering noise and color will be easier because it’s not trying to do it on a shaky image?

Not sure. Hopefully someone else can chime in,

Manny

Thanks Manny. I think stabilizing would make sense to do first…was just wondering if stabilizing doesnt mess up the noise profile in anyway. I thought of a simple approach…rather stupid of me not to think of it…but stabilize first…then simply click “Shut off FX” on the stabilize, then do noise and color, then click that back on when I am finished. That way…it doesnt really matter what order I do them in rendering wise…and can put them in the chain however looks best based off my own eyes. Kind of a dumb question after I thought about it. Thanks a lot though for the input!
