Tell me your secrets...

haha.. I'm sure some of us are wondering, "Hey, how did So & So make that video" or maybe " what program did he or she use?" Well... lets just get it all out in the open now.. because I"m intersted to hear what you all are using!! Me? I'm using a custom built PC ( ya ya ya ya ya... PC... ) I built this unit myself. It's an XFX nForce 680i Motherboard, 1333Mhx FSB, Q6600 Intel Core2 Quad @ 2.40Ghz, 4 Gb of DDR2 RAM @ 800 Mhz, Dual (SLI) MSI Nvidia 8800GT Video cards, 1024Mb GDDR3 RAM, PCI Express 2.0, HDCP ready, 224 combined streams, Over 5 Tera Bytes of Western Digital Delight using SATA 2, a Rosewill 850 watt Power Supply, an Acer 22" widescreen, a VIZIO 42" 1080i HDTV, Realtek 8.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound....
.
My old editing computer AquaMark benchmarked at 16,982... My new one... 133,927 without overclock... I play Call of Duty 4 at over 250 fps (490 when i look at the sky).. this thing fly's.....
.
For software... I use all adobe... I used to be a huge AVID / Pinnacle fan for about 7 years.. then, I got sick of it crashing every 2 minutes... SO i made the switch.. I have the Adobe CS3 Master Suite Pro... and I freakin' love it... Premiere obviously for major edits and After Effects for the fun stuff......
.
Video Equipment.. Canon XL2, GL2, a small panasonic and older sony... I have a mobile light kit and 10x20 muslin green screen that i've used for a number of shoots.....
.
My "Protect the Design" video was shot with a faster shutter speed to give it that "edgy action look." Saving Private Ryan was shot at 1/1000 shutter speed, I shot this at 1/500... I had to really run the lights hot to get a clean plate.. the cameras wanted to auto adjust at 1/60... open the iris and took control... as I mentioned in the comment page of the video, most of the magic took place in post. This video was a lot of fun to make and definitely required the most work in Adobe After Effects. After the major edits were completed, a series of special effects and sound effects foley were added. The gunshots are actually a combination of layers and clips that were luma-keyed over the original image. If you look closely, you can see the muzzle flash, secondary light spill, the gun slide recoil, and gun-shell ejection - all of which were not present in the original footage. There are other effects such as sparks and smoke that were keyed. The final "look" of the video was a combination of filters that included a vignette, blue tint, green tint, custom bleach bypass, and then two exact copies of the footage overlayed on top with different contrasts and transfer modes.......
.
The cell phone scene and "top secret folder" scene were also motion-tracked image overlays. The title screen at the end used key-framed stroke, shape layers, and two tinting layers (along with some good old fashioned "twitch" movements".......................................
.
.
So... tell me your secrets!! : - )

My pals over at RAGE films here in Bend, Oregon just picked up a RED last fall. This thing is the baddest toy to ever come down the block! We are planning on shooting a Western genre horror feature in the summer with it. OMG…soooooo nice! |

Those were cool. I really liked the title graphic for “North”. Wow! Every couple months, Portland has the Faux-film festival for the PDX filmakers showcase. You ought to take a reel of these and send ‘em in! |

You are most welcome! I am always looking to subscribe to things that are interesting and quality. I HIGHLY reccomend INDYMOGUL on youtube. Great cheap solutions to film problems. Some FX, some props, some equipment, all neat stuff. |

pixelthis, do you like the XH A1? I’ve been looking at that cam for a while now… still saving up some cash. Right now I’m still using the Sony VX2100 which I LOVE for NTSC but of course I’m looking for HD now… thoughts on the canon? |

Right now I’m still using the Sony VX2100 which I LOVE for NTSC but of course I’m looking for HD now… thoughts on the canon? I love it. I was a hardcore panasonic fan for the longest time.. Then I got a GL-2 for a great price and i fell in love with canon. I wanted to jump into the HD world for a while and I did quite a lot of research. For the money, the XH-A1 is the BEST camera. You can pick one up from B&H for $3k and it has more features than you can shake a stick at. The only better Canon would be the XL series like the XLH1… but that thing is so huge…. for an HD prosumer.. it’s fantastic. I love the 3 ring control on the lens… focus, zoom, and iris.. right at your finger tips.. not to mention the ungodly amount of controls and customization… You can fine tune everything from color temperature, knee, even the sensitivity of the sensors… all independently… Coupled with my FS-C firestore drive… it’s unstoppable… Can’t say enough positive things about it.. |

That’s good to hear. I’m looking to go HD soon so I’ve been searching for the camera that works best for me. I’ve been eyein’ up the XH A1 this one for a while now. I saw some negative comments on Amazon… but looks like people either a) didn’t get what they wanted and wanted the XH A1 to be something it’s not or b) just have too much to complain about. |
