This is the other Verizon video contest.

Your mission is to test the Verizon Smartphones!

Verizon created a Tumblr feed featuring these tests. Check them out here.

YOUR MISSION
Create a video, up to 60 seconds long, that demonstrates the speed, latency and/or coverage (see definitions below) of Verizon’s 4G LTE network in a wacky, clever, and fun way (keeping in mind these must be REAL tests with the REAL 4G LTE network). Your field test videos should truly test the power of the 4G LTE network – we’re looking for innovative ways that prove the power of Verizon’s 4G LTE network speed, latency and coverage – in your own way!

Hey Everyone,

As you may all know by now, there are 2 Verizon contests up on the site. The Field Tester Challenge came about from a tumblr site that Verizon set up. It’s kind of like a Mythbusters but exclusively for Verizon.

The mission is to test Verizon’s 4G or 3G (if you don’t have a 4G device) network. You also have to be careful about where you shoot. Keep this coverage area as a reference.

We want you to think of creative ways to test out the Verizon speed, coverage, latency (all defined in the brief). How? Check out the tumblr site for ideas!

The top ten videos at the end of the contest get sent a new 4G smartphone to recreate the test. Yup, 10 filmmakers will be asked to shoot once more after the contest is over. Then we will award the prizes.

Check out the full brief here.

Take it easy,
Manny

I’m wondering if the brand is looking for something similar to what they already have, or something completely different? Technically, if we create a test and make it like a story (just like their current commercials) we wouldn’t have to be in a 4G area to prove the power of the network.

So, do they want us to stage it (tell a compelling story that features the network), or to have like a 1 shot REAL test that shows the real time capabilities?

In case this isn’t clear, for example, on the “plane” commercial, we know they were actors on a sound stage producing a commercial. Are they looking for more examples of this, or create a test that a person could replicate in the 4G area?

Manny,

I’m also wondering how the brand feels about destroying a phone, like they did with the Mifi spot with the rocket… If the phone was destroyed to prove the power of the network, is that acceptable?

Hey guys!

No they don’t want you to stage it. They want you to conduct real life tests. It should be in the coverage area because that’s what you’re testing. They do want the feel of the tumblr site videos.

Thanks!

Hey Manny,

My last question got lost in a “quote” feature.

I was also wondering how Verizon feels about destroying a phone, like they did with the Mifi spot with the rocket? If proving a point is worth breaking a product, would the brand be ok with that?

Thanks,
Jordan

If they did it on the tumbler site I’m going to assume it’s ok. Let me ask first. BRB

Wait, what the heck? In the contest rules it states:

“Early Entry Awards – to award the “Early Entry Awards”, a judging panel comprised of Verizon representatives will review all eligible entries/videos received by 4:00 pm PST, Friday, July 29, 2011"

So when are the early entries due? On the 15th or on the 29th?

That was my bad!

I was going off of an old timeline! It’s the 29th not the 15th. My bad! I’ve also updated the blog post!

Is there a limit on how many videos need to be uploaded in order to get early entry prizes? Like say, there is only 5 or 6 videos. Would early entry prizes still be awarded?

I have a question.. I have a 4G verizon smartphone, but I’m not in an area that covers 4G, so I can only shoot the video using 3G connection. What I don’t understand is, how am I supposed to show Real testing of the 4G using 3G connection?

Also will the early prizes be announced before the competition closes?

Thanks.

Well. For the first part of the contest, you may do a video testing 3G. However, if your video gets chosen to be in the top 10, you’ll have to get to an area that does offer 4G to test the new device that you get the in mail from Verizon. Hops that’s clear

Thanks,
Manny

Ok thanks. So it’s more about the idea first? and if I do video testing 3G, and post before the 29th, am I still eligible for the early prize? Does it work like the top 10? Reshoot in 4G if selected?

Thanks.

All videos in before 4pm Pacific Time July 29, 2011 will be eligible for the Early Entry Prize.

And yes, if you are chosen as part of the top 10 after the upload period ends on 8/20, then you have to re-shoot in 4G using the phones sent to you.

You also get to keep the phone!

I had a problem with the Verizon end screen. I tried to import it into Adobe Premier Pro CS5 but it said that no video or audio track existed and it would not import. I eventually had to reencode the file but when I rendered my commercial it caused the end screen to shrink smaller then it should be. I had to upload the video so that I would not miss the early entry deadline but I plan on filming a few more videos so is there anyway that I can get a different file to use or a better work around to import it?

Hey there, I’ll see if I can convert it to a different format and we’ll see if that works. I’ll let everyone know when it’s in the materials download.

Hi ejwill,

I looked at the file. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it. I’m going to leave it as is. When you re-encode a file be sure to output at the original resolution.

Thanks,
Manny

Hey Everyone,

We have the winners of the Early Entry Contest.

Each of the winners came in before the deadline 7/29/11. After consideration, the client wanted to see some changes. This is why the videos seem as though they came in after the deadline.

Now, the winners are:

1. Faster Than a Speeding Bullet -

2. Mobile Gaming on 4G -

3. Verizon Gets all the Ladies -

Thanks,

Manny

Hey there, the client would like to stay away from alcohol. How about making a milk shake instead?

Thanks for the question!
