RUSSELL WILEY IS OUT TO LUNCH: A Novel by Richard Hine

*NOTE* The following is a short version of the brief to get people interested in this contest. The rest of the creative brief, including resources for obtaining electronic excerpts from the book, and an advanced copy of the book itself, are available in the downloadable Brief Files.

Richard Hine’s debut novel Russell Wiley Is Out To Lunch is a corporate satire, set in the New York media industry, that looks at the challenges of print media in making the transition to the digital age. Written by a true media insider, the novel will be published by Amazon’s new AmazonEncore imprint this October, will connect immediately with readers throughout the media and advertising business, and will resonate with everyone who works in a troubled industry.

It’s Fall 2006. And Russell Wiley is in deep trouble. A media executive for the failing Daily Business Chronicle, a company that needs “Unicorns”, Russell is the epitome of workhorse. His career is teetering on the brink of collapse, his sexless marriage is fast approaching its expiration date, and Russell can’t stop fantasizing about his beguiling colleague. Forget trouble, disaster seems imminent…and that’s before he makes a careless mistake that could cost the paper millions.

An edgy and ultimately uplifting satire set in the New York media industry, Richard Hine’s debut novel looks at the challenges print media faces in making the transition to the digital age—and above all, the absurdities of corporate life, and the challenges of modern relationships. Think ‘The Office’ meets ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ meets ‘American Beauty’.
