I love the Internet because of its amazing butterfly effect.
The Butterfly Effect basically states that every action, no matter how small, can have an effect on a large variety of things. For example, the flap of a butterfly’s wings can slightly change the atmospheric pressure, which could lead to a thunderstorm in Texas or a clear and sunny day.
The Internet has this effect as well. Every post, comment, rating, view, and message can lead to something bigger. These actions can form communities, relationships, conversation, support, exchange, and freedom.
Let’s say a person had a really bad day, and they post a little status about it on Facebook. Then, a friend says to them, ‘you should make a blog about this, I bet a lot of people feel the same as you do.’ So the individual makes a profile and a blog and begins to write in it daily about his/her experiences. And at first the site really has no activity, but when someone stumbles upon it and links to it on their Twitter, more and more people are exposed to it. Soon the blog has a large population of followers, and they decide to create a forum. This forum allows them to have conversations, plan events, and contact one another personally. As the site grows, more and more people join, and they’re posting videos, images, and comments, not only on their webpage, but all over the internet.
There you have: The Butterfly Effect. A simple status can lead to a social movement or a thriving company.
I love the Internet because we’ll never know how much of a difference the little things we do can make.
